Back-Rooms: an inspiration for Project 4811
It seems this thing is growing. I don't even really understand what it is. But it seems to resonate with others plagued with either haunted memory, habitual de ja Vue, or rampant synchronicity consciousness, and those simply curious on the strangest of lost media and internet enigmas. A line might be drawn from Silent Hill and Metal Gear, then to other newer games such as Control, a game which by itself borrows from the creepier elements of the X-Files and Twin Peaks, and the metaphysical aspects of X-Men and Stranger Things, all of which seem relevant to internet-only phenomenon such as Slender Man, Siren Head, and now the entire infinity mythology that is the SCP Foundation.
Some other phenomenon appear related but might only be zeigeist for the others existence. These include the "Back Rooms', Cicada 3301, the proposed Jejune Institute (SRI circa Cold War, essentially) from Beyond The Black Rainbow, and aspects of both geocaching and ARGs and related evidence.
Is this universal familiarity we can't quite put our finger on, or even name for that matter...Is this something we all share some memory of? Or some mysterious preexisting knowledge all humans can tap into? An akashic record reading of sorts or perhaps or some psychic or astral internet we all are familiar with, but not in any specific way or memory, which one can explain or specify at all, which solves these feelings of overwhelming familiarity. Of course Jung might tell us we search for this kind of meaning, perhaps psychiatry at the end of the day wishes to inform us our brain is fully capable of filling in the missing context when given mere puzzle pieces or symptoms of a given scenario, even if the puzzle pieces we start with are entirely new data in and of themselves, our.minds want, our minds seek wholeness. We complete half finished information unconsciously or automatically, so this gets convoluted.
In the 90's these kind of explorations seemed to be originating from games, anime, and comics but mainly was an abstract collection of unrelated lost media and creepypasta contents, the idea of which only came to reach mere tulpa level reality blending when an unfortunate pair of young ladies thought it the desire of Slender Man to horrifically murder one of their peers as a sacrifice. Suddenly these paranormal crypto memes, or that's what they've become apparently, had a form of life we thought impossible. Heavy and dark concepts and systems of powerful Magick abbreviated in headlines and pop culture merch, similar to the way we've transfigured Cthulhu into plush cuddle creatures. So we have a ways to go with our darker sides integration of more powerful and even crucial ideas.
The back rooms reminds us of a newly found field in photography, that of abandoned buildings malls and structures. Anyone who went there before the Fall, will inevitably feel the lack of vibrance and vitality these now long abandoned places, once hosted, upon gazing at the lifeless neon lit shelves and doorways, back corridors and long abandoned merchandise.
The very idea of a world parralel to our own seems to then implicate other possibilities, such as mutually visited locations not in this reality. These ideas could be ancient and already comprehended as spiritual realms such as a waiting room setting or other common purgatory like settings.
